RMS Founded in Hill City, SD in 1999 as a mountain bike tour company in the Black Hills and Badlands.  Shop was set up in the back of Granite Sports with a telephone number, credit card machine, crappy old van and some rental bikes. We had a fun time with Sue (THANKS Sue!!) and the gang in the back of the Granite Sports shop, but we had to grow a bit, which was easy, because it wasn't possible to be any smaller. In 2001 we added a service shop (A Special thanks to Travis Mosebar for making this happen), became a dealer for Gary Fisher, Bianchi & Jamis bicycles, and moved 1 block down the street to another location in a cool old log house across from the train depot.

Rushmore Bicycles took on its signature look and feel when we had to jam a fully stocked bike shop into this 800 sq ft log house. It became a fun place for bikers to meet for tours and browse for parts and accessories few shops in the country dared to stock, not a square inch was wasted, large people could not fit between all the stuff. As we were off the beaten path, customers drove out of their way to visit us, maybe we were on to something. We were doing what we loved and putting customers first. Our begining in Hill City not only taught us to fit an extrodinary amount of stuff into a small space, but to service bikers "now", most who were on tours and bicycling vacations.

In 2002 Jesse & Petra were married after a very short engagement and a team emerged, countless friends were made over the next few years, even more long hours in the shop keeping bikers rolling happily, Rushmore Bicycles grew out of a seasonal shop in Hill City, and opened another shop in Spearfish, SD at 312 West Jackson Blvd.
We just love bikes, but more than bikes, people. Many people warned us not to open up a shop in Spearfish, since there was already an established shop already in town with fluorescent lights, carpet, huge SALE banners and mathching polo shirts for the employees, t'was said we couldn't compete. Well, as one to shy away from advice, Jesse polished & painted the old garage on Jackson, stacked bikes and bike parts to the 14 ft ceiling. It was a classic small bike shop, very small, a little dirty, but it had everything the enthusiast needed to get down the road or up the trail.

Being a specialty bike shop, winters were slow, the many hours bouncing around on a trials bike out front of the shop, riding the log teeter- totter, thoughts of an "outdoor" shop along with our bike shop started to seem like a good idea. After a couple of years of having a good time putting the customers first, again it was time to grow.
One day Mike Short, the UPS delivery man for the shop, teamed up with us to buy the service station on the corner of Main and Grant streets in Spearfish. Not a lot of thought was put into the purchase, we were gung ho and just rammed the idea to fruition. After yanking out the gas tanks from the filling station and getting the car hoists pulled out of the service bays, Mike and Jesse began the remodel. Four months of long nights later Rushmore Mountain Sports and ALPINE Coffee were open for business. Alpine Coffee & crew were slinging coffees and grub, RMS & gang were fixing, selling bikes, winter sports gear and climbing equipment. A match made in heaven it has been said. John Reth is our local road pro here in Spearfish, a regular at our shop road rides in the summer.
